In April 2003 I traded my hometown of Haarlem, Netherlands, for the San Francisco Bay Area and a career in tech journalism and high-tech public relations. But work isn't the only reason I like the area, as you'll see on this blog, which will primarily have photos and some personal thoughts.

Mega Burger At Moss Beach Distillery
The Moss Beach Distillery in Moss Beach, CA, is a perfect spot to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean and at the same time learn a bit about California history. They also serve great bar food and yummy calamari in addition to local brews and wines. The spot is a bit hidden, so no mass tourism here and genuine service. Tonight I had a burger, with avocado and turkey bacon, it ended up being gigantic! Tasty, but I couldn't finish it. Luckily I brought a friend to help.

Ashes Cancel Flights From Dulles
On my way back to the West Coast today I spotted lots of "Cancelled" notices on the departure monitors at Washington's Dulles International Airport. All flights to Europe were cancelled, a few exceptions only (there was a long line at the SAS counter for one flight that may depart.) Still, the airport was busier than I expected and the Duty Free store at United's C gates was open as well. I've got friends who are likely stuck in Spain and Holland, trying to go to London and San Francisco, respectively. It is interesting how a natural phenomenon can gnarl the world this way, I'm happy to be headed home without ash hinder.
National Air and Space Museum - Dulles
After a trip to DC for work I took the opportunity to spend the weekend here and hang out with relatives and pay a visit to the Dulles Airport outpost of the National Air and Space Museum. It is something I had been wanting to see for a while, but never had the chance. So, in I went and I wasn't disappointed. This is a good place to spend a few hours when in the Dulles area and to see some historic planes, right next to the modern ones taking off and landing at Dulles.
The museum shows planes from different eras, including a large collection of World War II and Cold War era planes, like this MiG shown below. It also has a space shuttle that actually never went into space, but made some flights in our atmosphere.

Enola Gay
It is fitting to visit the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum the week of the Nuclear Summit in Washington DC. On display here is the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped "the bomb" on Hiroshima, Japan, during the second world war. A sad event that luckily made people realize how evil the A bomb really is and we'll be dealing with the aftermath of that invention forever.
The Air and Space Museum is close to Dulles Airport (an outpost, hq is on the National Mall in DC) and is easy to visit. Parking costs $15 but entrance is free and if you're staying nearby, airport hotel shuttles will take you here for free.
Dutch Car In Virginia?
I've seen cars from many states driving around wherever in the United States, but this is the first time I've seen a car with a license plate from my home country, the Netherlands. It is a large Ford, which I don't think they sell back home, so my guess is this person took an old Dutch plate and put it on the front of his/her US car :) that's different than the old fashioned "NL" sticker.
